Bird Feeders for Home Gardens

Bird Feeders for Home Gardens

A bird feeder for a home garden is a container device made to attract and feed birds. Homemade hummingbird food, homemade seed, homemade oriole nectar, and fat feeder are required for inviting a sufficient number of birds. Making hummingbird nectar, knowing birds that like grape jelly and birds not eating nyjer seed or niger seed are important techniques in maintaining bird feeders. Cornell Lab Feeder Watch and Feederwatch Canada contribute a lot to bird lovers to feed their visiting guests.

Bird feeders are gaining popularity in my area lately. Bird feeders are becoming popular among bird lovers, backyard birdwatchers, and home gardeners who want to provide food for local bird populations, observe them up close, and enjoy the beauty of these flyers. Though bird feeders are made in various forms and designs, they can be selected as per the location, including home gardens, public gardens, kitchen gardens, roof gardens, backyards, balconies, and near windows.

What to Feed in Bird Feeders?

Birds are fed a variety of foods in bird feeders depending on the species of birds and location. Some common food items for bird feeders are given below:

Nectar-feeding birds like hummingbirds and orioles are attracted to sweet liquids.

Homemade Hummingbird Food (Making Hummingbird Nectar):

Homemade hummingbird food is made by mixing 1 part white sugar with 4 parts water in a saucepan. It will be brought to a boil and stirred until the sugar dissolves. After cooling it will be filled into the fbird eeder. The nectar is changed every 2-3 days, especially in hot weather, to keep it fresh for the hummingbirds.

Homemade Oriole Nectar:

Homemade Oriole Nectar is prepared by mixing 1/4 cup white sugar with 1 cup boiling water. The mixture is stirred until the sugar dissolves. It will later be cooled and poured into a clean oriole feeder. Nectar should be replaced every few days in the bird feeder.

Homemade Bird Seed:

Homemade bird seed is made by mixing a combination of various bird-friendly seeds such as black oil sunflower seeds, nyjer (thistle) seeds, safflower seeds, millets, cracked corn, and peanuts. All these or a available few seeds are mixed in a large bowl and stored in an airtight container. This mixture is offered in bird feeders to attract a variety of birds to your yard. The type of seeds that attract different feeder birds is given below:

  • Black oil sunflower seeds - chickadees, finches, and cardinals
  • Nyjer (thistle) seed -  finches, particularly American goldfinches
  • Safflower seeds - cardinals, chickadees, and doves, and are less likely to attract squirrels
  • Millets - sparrows and juncos
Note: If you find that some birds not eating Nyjer seed, that might be due to poor quality seed, feeder type, bird feeder placement, feeder cleanliness, and seasonal preferences.

Fat Feeder (Suet):

A fat feeder, far bird feeder or suet is prepared by mixing melted suet or lard with birdseed, nuts, dried fruit, or mealworms. The mixture is poured into moulds or containers and cooled and solidified. This high-energy treat is beneficial to birds, especially during cold weather. This feed is appealing to woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees.

Meal Worms:

Mealworms are the larval form of the mealworm beetle fed to birds, reptiles, and fish used in bird feeders. High protein and fat content make them a nutritious treat for many birds. Mealworms are purchased in live, dried, and freeze-dried forms. They are commonly used to attract insect-eating birds (entomophagous) such as bluebirds, wrens, and chickadees.

Fruits:

A variety of birds like orioles and tanagers are attracted to fruits like oranges and apples.

Grape Jelly:

Birds that like grape jelly are orioles and red-bellied woodpeckers. Oriole feeders with wells for grape jelly or small dishes are used. Be cautious about using artificial sweeteners in bird feeders, which can be harmful to birds.

Cookie Cutter Bird Feeder:

Cookie cutter bird feeder is made by mixing gelatin with birdseed and press into cookie cutters. It is required to add a straw for a hanging hole and let it set a bird feeder before removing it from the cutter.

Cake Feeder:

A cake feeder is made by mixing gelatin, birdseed, and flour into a thick paste. The thick paste has pressed a mould, and let it set before hanging it outside for birds.

It's understood that it is important to provide a variety of foods to attract different kinds of birds. But, bird feeders should be kept clean and regularly filled with fresh food to attract birds and keep them coming back.

"Squirrel Boss" appeared on Season 4, Episode 25 of Shark Tank. The product was a bird feeder with a remote control to give squirrels a harmless static electric shock to deter them from stealing birdseed.

How to Set up a Bird Feeder?

Given under a step-by-step guide on how to set up a bird feeder:

1. Choose the Right Location:

The bird feeder should be in a location where you can observe the birds, but not too close to windows where the birds might accidentally collide with window panes. It is better to select a spot with some natural green cover nearby, to provide shelter for the birds.

2. Select the Right Feeder:

Select a feeder that suits the types of birds nearby and the bird seeds you plan to use.

3. Choose Birdseed:

Various bird species prefer different seeds in bird feeders. The most common ones are sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, millet, and thistle. A mix of seeds can attract a variety of birds.

4. Install the Feeder:

Hang or mount the bird feeder securely in such a way that it should be stable and doesn't sway excessively in the wind. Use brackets, hooks, or specialized feeder poles for this purpose.

5. Provide Perches:

There should be perches near the bird feeder to let birds land on before feeding. In the absence of perches, small sticks or dowels can be provided to serve as perching spots. In some cases, a sturdy bird feeder pole is required to support a bird feeder. It is commonly placed in a garden and can be customized with accessories like baffles or hooks.

6. Maintain Cleanliness:

Regularly clean the feeder and perches to prevent the growth of mould on the bird droppings and the spread of diseases. A brush and warm, soapy water serve the purpose.

Cleaning hummingbird feeders with vinegar:

To clean hummingbird feeders with vinegar, soak feeders in a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water for at least an hour. Afterwards, scrub them and rinse thoroughly before drying.

7. Keep It Stocked:

Always keep the bird feeder well-stocked with fresh birdseed.

8. Choose a Time to Watch:

Enjoy watching the birds that come to your bird feeder, especially during dawn and dusk.

9. Be Patient:

It may take some time for birds around to discover your installed bird feeder, so be patient. Once they do, you'll definitely see a variety of local bird species visiting your home regularly.

10. Record Your Observations:

Keep a bird journal to record the different species of birds you watch, their behaviours, and any interesting observations.

Ques: What is the best feeder to attract birds?

Ans: Suet feeders are used to attract a variety of birds like chickadees,  jays, nuthatches, woodpeckers, and titmice. They open only at the bottom and force birds to hang upside down while feeding. This design usually excludes starlings, which have trouble perching upside down.

Ques: Why aren't birds coming to my bird feeder?

Ans: Birds are not visiting your bird feeder due to the poorly designed feeders, or those in disrepair. Make sure that the bird feeders are in good working condition and that the seeds are easy for the birds to feed from them. Also, provide water and avoid bird-scaring structures and noise.

Ques: How do I attract birds to my feeder in India?

Ans: You can attract birds to your feeder in India by providing kitchen leftovers in windows.  Hang a variety of bird feeders at different levels in your garden and fill them up with treats like seed mixes, peanuts and fat balls. Do not forget to provide water for the visiting birds.

Ques: What colour bird feeder attracts the most birds?

Ans: Different birds have their favourite colours as follows:

  • Red and pink - Hummingbirds.

  • Yellow -  Goldfinches

  • Blue - Bluebirds

  • Orange - Orioles

Ques: Where is the best place to put bird feeders?

Ans: The thick and luxuriant foliage of the evergreens provides a year-long hiding place for birds from predators. But, do not keep too close to the cover as it is an easy way for squirrels to jump off from branches and theft food in bird feeders. The bird feeders should not be accessible to bird-catching cats either.
